Whitehacked Alchemy: Materia Shards!

More alchemy! This time: materia shards, which are crystallized essences from the elemental planes which daring adventurers and alchemist may gather to produce specific supernatural effects. Think of them as single-use abilities players may gain access too!


Air Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: knockdown + pushed back

Crushing this materia shard releases a gust of wind in a 20 feet cone, pushing all within back for 10 feet, plus knocking them down on a failed save.

Ash Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: field of ash

Crushing this materia shard releases a field of ash 10 feet in every direction. This ash persists for 1d6 rounds and is very difficult to move through. Creatures that end their turn touching the ash take 1 cold damage.

Dust Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: deteriorating touch

Crushing this materia shard causes you to deal 1d6 damage the first creature touched or alternatively destroys a single object no bigger than a melon instantly.

Earth Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: barrier

Crushing this gem in your hand and sprinkling it on the ground raises a barrier of stone, either 10 feet wide and 5 feet tall or the other way around. After 1d6 minutes the barrier crumbles to dust.

Fire Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: 2d6 fiery damage

Throwing this materia shard causes it to explode in a 20 feet burst, dealing damage to all creatures and structures within, who may save to halve the damage.

Ice Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: slippery ground

Throwing this materia shard causes it to explode in a 20 feet burst where the ground becomes covered in ice for 1d6+2 rounds. Creatures moving this area can only move at half speed and need to save or fall prone.

Lightning Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: 1d6 shocking damage

Crushing this shard causes a 200 fett burst ring of electricity to spread outwards from you, dealing damage to all creatures it touches (no save).

Magma Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: +2 fiery damage

Crushing this shard over your weapon coats it in magma for 1d6+2 rounds during which your attacks deal additional damage and light targets on fire on a critical hit. After the duration you need to roll for gear degradation.

Mineral Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: 1d6+2 temporary hitpoints

Crushing this shard Crushing this shard causes a thin layer of crystal to grow over your skin, granting you temporary hit points that last for 1d6+2 minutes or until depleted.

Negative Energy Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: temporary hitpoints

Crushing this materia shard and then touching a dying or very hurt creature desintegrates its body, granting you temporary hit points that last for 1d6+2 minutes or until depleted. Additionally you gain combat advantage for 1d6 rounds.

Ooze Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: 1d6 acid damage

Crushing this materia shard shoots a ray of ooze at a target which takes 1d6-2 acid damage every round for 1d6-1 rounds on a successful attack.

Positive Energy Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: 1d6 damage vs undead

Crushing this materia shard releases a 15 foot burst of energy, dealing 1d6 damage to all undead creatures and granting all living creatures combat advantage for 1 round.

Radiance Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: confusion (1d6-2 rounds)

Crushing this materia shard releases a burst of color in a 15 foot cone. Creatures within this area need to save or become confused for 1d6-2 rounds.

Salt Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: summon

Crushing this materia shard and dropping it to the ground causes it to reform into a small salt construct with HD 2 that will aid you in combat, crumbling to regular salt 1d6 rounds later.

Smoke Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: smoke form

Crushing this materia shard causing you to turn into smoke for 1 round and sets your MV to 60, after which you reform.

Steam Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: 1d6-2 fiery damage + blinded (1 rd)

Crushing this materia shard releases a gust of scalding air in a 15 feet cone, dealing damage and blinding those who failed their save temporarily.

Vacuum Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: pull + knocked down

Throwing this shard causes it to explode and pull in all creatures within a 20 feet burst towards the center on a failed save. Creatures that collide also fall prone.

Water Shard

  • Activation Cost: 2 hit points
  • Effect: push back or pull

Crushing this materia shard releases a wave of water directed at a single creature within 20 feet. On a failed save the target is either pushed or pulled 10 feet, at your discretion.
